Colin Rothwell An absolute powerhouse of a record...the premiere release from Russell Davis showcases some of the very best that UNC-Chapel Hill has to offer. Combining influences from jazz, post hardcore, and neo-soul, "refracting, reflecting" blends these genres into a unique soundscape that is unbelievably enjoyable. Davis is backed by an all-star cast of musicians from all over the country and the result is truly a work of art. Don't sleep on this release; it's worth every penny. Favorite track: Flickers.

about

On "Refracting, Reflecting", Russell brings together a unique blend of rock and modern jazz styles and presents the listener with 8 (well, 7 really) different instrumental journeys to explore. All of these compositions were created by Russell during his college tenure; this album was recorded as a result of the 2016 UNC Jazz Studies Scholarship. Russell is influenced by artists such as: Robert Glasper, Walter Smith III, Gerald Clayton, Christian Scott, Chris Potter, Becca Stevens, Kneebody, Ben Wendel, Brian Blade, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Hiatus Kaiyote, The Reign of Kindo, Tides of Man, and many, many more. Special shoutout to the incredible group of friends/musicians that brought these songs to life.
